Commonly, the alphorn is related to dense pasture, happy cows and archaic melodies, i.e. a Switzerland of past times. Unless trombone player Robert Morgenthaler lifts this long wooden trumpet to his lips. In 1994 he founded an alphorn trio in order to leave the familiar kind of alphorn music. His intention was to explore the hidden opportunities of this mystic instrument, without denying its tradition, though. «Roots of Communication», the newly-founded trio, present compositions of their own and sequences of improvisation inspired by jazz and classical music, as well as Asian, African and European folk music. The incredible tonal range of the trombones and the magic sound of the Sea-Shells both extend the spectrum of sound. As a particular highlight Morgenthaler also plays the didgeridoo, the âEUR~alphornâEURTM of the australian Aborigines. Finally, the drums add another dimension and form a bright contrast to the rather meditative and shady sound of the horns.
