Liner Notes: An exciting new Chemistry between Historic and Contemporary Repertoires
After moving to Switzerland in 1992, American flutist and composer Robert Dick met two performers of classical Baroque music âEUR" Petra Kaufmann and Conrad Steinmann âEUR" as involved as he is with the invisible but real ties that bind ancient and contemporary music and the practice of improvisation. The quintet Oscura Luminosa is the fruit of this involvement, enriched over time by encounters with singer Dorothea Schürch and cello player Alfred Zimmerlin, and work with historic and contemporary repertoires. A personal interpretation of one of Claudio MonteverdiâEURTMs (1567âEUR"1643) most famous madrigals "The Combat of Tancredi and Florinda" based on the poem by Torquato Tasso, and MetallicaâEURTMs superb anathema ("Leper Messiah") discloses new perspectives and offers some lively considerations on musical expression. Their interpretation of Monteverdi proposes a new reading of a work that marked an important step in musical history; the piece by Metallica is interpreted according to the heavy metal canon. The focus of the record however are the three tracks interspersed between these revivals âEUR" collective improvisations in a musical idiom that grows increasingly luminous.
