DIE PILZE
On their debut album “Wer sind die Pilze” (“Who are the Mushrooms”) the eponymous band tells us of the Kingdom of Rench, of a prayer book of prehistoric times, of Rimsky Korsakov’s duck shooting, and of their idea of Jazz, which could also be called “Taaahhht!!!” – all this without engaging in highly questionable syntactical experiments.
Labels on wine bottles often refer to an aroma of berries, with a trace of black pepper. Although this also applies to “The Mushrooms”, there are more appropriate ways of description. If “The Mushrooms” were a commercial for the profession of a traffic cop, this is how they would be advertised: “The Mushrooms, as direct as life itself.” For their music reaches the area between cortex and pelvic floor without any detours of radio stations, elevators, or daily soaps. And their music is as compact as quince, the fruit of the simple man, which the ruling classes tend to turn into jelly and spread on their bread. The melancholic eats it in the form of “quince-bread,” thinking of aurora borealis, which he only knows from hearsay, quietly humming “Sele Leondra”.
Young bands are similar to old kitchens. You sit at a tiled corner table drinking coffee. You laugh, sometimes suppress a tear, refusing to take everything too seriously; you dance on the table or tell stories. If one refrains from decorating the history of the band with anecdotes from childhood about recorder-rowdies jumping across campfires, it is quickly told:
“The Mushrooms” were founded by the saxophonist Benedikt Reising in 2006 and will not disband too quickly. |
