liner notes: INSOMNIA – WIDE AWAKE IN A DREAM
“Who listens to the music of the Zurich trio, thinks of some monster interval rising from the depths of rock bass to the heights of technoid sinus sound. Or of a daring knight move on the playing grounds of the musical now and here: from the improvising avant-garde forwards to German techno and then two squares back to the Bristol past.”
Ueli Bernays (NZZ Feuilleton)

The double album “Insomnia” emerged from countless studio sessions between 2007 and 2010. Created were gigabites of sounds and grooves, which were condensed in these two CDs. Multiple sequencers interlock, counterbeats arise without measure, tones of irritating familiarity. The conscious distancing from pre-established ways, the creation of musical antimatter, can be experienced on “Insomnia” like on no other of the 5 former CDs by Superterz.

The sensualization of bits and bites
Surprising, unfamiliar and iridescent they are, these crystallizations of huge halls, ceiling-less churches, labyrinthine corridors, wide plains, ragged chasms and infinite heights and they keep spitting us out like Alice from Wonderland. Rhythms seem to be standing outside of time and yet grooves form that go straight to the guts. One imagines oneself to be inside a machine. Seemingly familiar sounds of guitars, drums, synthesizers and electronics, voices and a trombone, like woven into a veil dance, ensnare but never lull. “Insomnia” is a poetical work in which bits and bites mount up to sensual realities and every second constitutes a new discovery.

Between the concerts
“Insomnia” is not a compilation of songs that you can hear again in concert. They are journals, instantaneous recordings in cosmic noise that will never return but which are resumed. Each concert is a new beginning on the basis of what faded out last time. This unique musical language of Superterz develops from a purposeful meandering without a direction being given. The references are a few tracks, this groove that we all know from the cellars and canteens of the Techno movement and this claim never to do the same thing twice but to move ahead without determining a direction like the expansion of cosmic energy after the big bang.

“Electronic music – so to speak – strikes roots in the earth of new music, improvisation and post-rock.”
Ueli Bernays (NZZ Feuilleton)

“It is manic music, music that crosses the line, a merging of various worlds. Fading in and out: electronics, percussion and acoustic instruments in a discourse between Jazz, Electronic and Post-Rock; music as field than as sealed composition. SUPERTERZ, the project of the two brothers Marcel and Ravi Vaid (the former a multiple awardee of film music, the latter the maker of the Dachkantine-film) is dedicated wide awake to improvisation on the upcoming album “Insomnia”. A double-CD with journals of live encounters like with the Neue-Musik-pianist Marianne Schroeder and the trombonist Bernhard Bamert. The Jazz guitarist Harald Haerter and the drummer Simon Berz will accompany Superterz on the occasion of their CD-release.”
