liner notes: CONTREBAND – A LIVE ALBUM
On January 15, 2010, Unit Records releases a second album from Contreband, the trio founded by drummer Raphaël Pedroli and featuring Colin Vallon (Fender Rhodes) and Lorenz Beyeler (Upright Bass). The album has been recorded live at the BeJazz Vidmarhallen (Bern, Switzerland) to celebrate 10 years of collaboration between the musicians.
This seven-track opus is their third common recording, coming after “Les Ombres” (Colin Vallon Trio, Unit Records, 2004) and “Lyoba” (Contreband, 2006). It has been recorded on June 24 and 25, 2009, aiming at capturing the raw energy of a live performance. Besides original compositions, it features personal interpretations of two Grunge-Rock standards from Nirvana and two titles from Thom Yorke (Radiohead).
Through this unusual repertoire, the musicians also testify to their enthusiasm toward innovation and collaborative explorations. An approach devoid of any nostalgia, based on the sheer joy of reinterpreting and communicating music.
